If you don't want to modify the actual geometry, you can define a new cell that is the union of the two cells and put it into an universe that is not part of the geometry. Then use this cell in the detector with dc parameter.

How have you defined your lattice? The lattice definition should work using the syntax described here.

I tried to reproduce the error with a very simple input but I did not succeed. Can you provide us some input that produces the error? Otherwise it is a bit difficult to help you. Also, what Serpent version are you using?

If you use setmat with the regular mesh based interface (type 2), the material name in the ifc file is actually not used and you can just put some word after the interface type.
