I'm planning on using Serpent on my PC to run programs for a university. Should I get a VPN?

I'm not doing particularly secretive work, simply running a few molten salt reactor simulations. By no means would there be any significant fallout if the information got leaked, however I'd like to make sure that it's stored and run securely. Would installing something like Norton's VPN and running in a virtual machine like VMware be worth it?

I don't quite understand how using VPN connection would make it more secure.
